Thomas Messel has been designing and creating the finest handcrafted, stylishly elegant furniture since 1979. His style is characterised by a sense of the Romantic and is influenced by his enthusiasm for the European 17th century to 19th century decorative arts, from the Baroque to the Neo-classical, as well as his practical appreciation of contemporary design.

Thomas is one of England’s most respected furniture designers, with an impressive string of design, decoration and Guild Mark awards to his name. His work has been acclaimed in publications throughout the world, most recently in the USA in American House & Garden; in the United Kingdom, in Apollo, House & Garden and Country Life.

His clientele are the foremost interior designers in England (Alidad, Colefax and Fowler, Jane Churchill, Amanda Murray, Nicky Haslam, Private Lives and Michael Priest) and in New York (Charlotte Moss, Robert Couturier, Tony Ingrao, Cullman and Kravis and Scott Salvator). Some of his private commissions have been for the Earl and Countess of Derby, the Crown Estates, Kensington Palace, Windsor Castle, and the late Miss Joan Rivers.

Thomas personally designs and draws every detail of his furniture, which is subsequently built by the very finest craftsmen: cabinet makers, chair frame makers, carvers, gilders, painters and upholsterers, as well as drawing on the skills of more specialist craftsmen, working in metal, glass, shell, stone, marble, scagliola, pietra dura, marquetry, leather and vellum.
